Captain John Garland was born in 1758 in Rochester, New Hampshire to Daniel and Sarah Roberts Garland. He married first, Sally Blaisdell who died in 1805 after giving birth to seven children. He then married Sally Kimball in 1810. They had six children together. She died in 1835. He passed away 12 Jul 1838 in Wakefield, New Hampshire.

He enlisted in the Revolutionary War on 10 May 1777 under the name John Garlin (the way the name is often pronounced), when he was only 19. He was discharged 10 May 1780. He was in the Battle of Bunker Hill and wintered in Valley Forge with General George Washington. He was also a Captain in the State Militia. In 1785, he was chosen Surveyor of Highways.
